You can see the mountains, the snowy mountains, the local people, the llamas, the alpacas, and especially the vicuñas (family of llamas and alpacas, vicuña has the most expensive wool in the world) and much more. And also, Runas Expeditions offers you experiential tourism, interact with local people and learn everything about their culture. Before hiking we will visit this famous community CHILLIHUANI where we show you what our social project is, so you can be part of these amazing project. Day 1: CUSCO – CUSIPATA – CHILLIHUANI – LLAQTOPAMPA – VICUÑA PAMPA - RAINBOW MOUNTAIN – RED VALLEY- CUSCO.
We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco with our private minivan at 3:00am. Then we’ll drive for 3 hours around to the trailhead called LLAPTO PAMPA (4,100 m / 13,120 ft), and the place where we’ll be driving is called the south valley, along the drive we will appreciate very good views of many of these high Mountains, villages, etc. You should keep awake to enjoy the part of the journey. As soon as we reach the beginning of the hike called LLAPTO PAMPA , our chef will make the first delicious breakfast for you and also this is the place where horses and horsemen will meet us.
After breakfast we’ll begin our hike expedition uphill, following a lovely stream, you will be immediately surprised by the literally herds of alpacas and llamas and we will have consistent views of the Llaqto mountain, Llapto Valley and Ausangate Mountain (6400m/20480ft). After 3 and half hours of hiking uphill we will reach the top of the Rainbow Mountain. The whole journey trek you will be just yourself, tour guide and some local people. And we will be able to witness up close the local wildlife and camelids in their natural environment called VICUÑAS (family of llamas and alpacas, vicuña has the most expensive wool in the world) and much more.
Once you get the summit of the Rainbow Mountain your tour guide will take you the best spot to take your photos and your guide will explain everything about the origin of these mountains, what makes up the existence of the Rainbow Mountain?, and much more. Also your guide will offer you coca tea to celebrate at this high elevation. After you get some time to relax you say goodbye the rainbow mountain and hike to the View point of Red Valley. Enjoy it the amazing Views of The Red Valley and take all your photos.
After taking your photos and enjoying the views, you will be trekking back to the beginning of the trek LLAPTO PAMPA (gradual downhill). On the way down, we will have amazing views of stunning mountains, Surine Mountain and much more, also you may see the fantastic animals called VICUÑAS. On the way down if we have time you’ll be interacting with the local residents. Your tour guide will explain about all their traditions, what they do growing at farming lands, what type of animals they farm, what type of religions they practice, and much more. So that is a fantastic opportunity to learn about their culture. Lunch we’ll be in LLAPTO PAMPA (round 1pm).
After Lunch we say goodbye to all our team, then we’ll drive back to Cusco for 3 ½ hours with our private minivan.
Our transportation will take you back to your Hotel and you will bid farewell to your guide and cook. Arrival time back to Cusco is 6:30pm.

Hikers should be reasonably fit, and spend some time in Cusco to acclimate, we recommend at least 2 days in Cusco or some similar elevation.

Every camping tour includes a spacious 4 man tent that will be shared by only two people so you can spread out a bit. These are all King Camp Tents made for all seasons. Our rentals are top of the line: Inflatable mattress, Black Diamond Adjustable Walking Sticks . Sleeping Bags rented from us are mummy style down bags for -15C and liners are always included.
Every trek includes a chef that has been trained in culinary school. They have learned the magic of mountain cooking and you will be amazed. You will enjoy full breakfast, lunch and dinner all served hot and tasty. We also include Happy Hour with snacks and some hot tea before dinner. The key to feeling good on a trek like this is eating well and staying hydrated.
Meals are all served family style - large plates for everyone to take what they like. And all food restrictions are honored. No matter if you are vegetarian or gluten free, you will always be well fed.
